Watanabe Mayu, member of AKB48 and their sub-unit Watarirouka Hashiritai 7, released her first solo photobook called “Mayuyu” last Friday and ranked third on today’s Oricon Weekly Chart for books in the general category. It was also revealed, that the book already sold over 45,000 copies in it’s first week.

With one of the most exposing covers in the group’s history, Mayuyu managed to break the Oricon record for solo photobooks. Up until now it was pop queen Hamasaki Ayumi who had been holding onto the record with her photobook “Ayu no Deji Deji Nikki 2000-2009” that was released in 2009 and claimed the fourth place after its first week.

About the photobook she commented, “It was a bit embarrassing, but I worked hard for this (photobook) and want a lot of people to take a look at it!”

So far the best-selling solo photobooks from other AKB48 girls had been Maeda Atsuko’s “Acchan” (02/2010) and Kojima Haruna’s “Onna no Ko no Kamisama” (03/2011), that both ranked ninth for their first week.

Mayuyu recently announced that she aims for the top 3 at AKB48’s upcoming “3rd Senbatsu General Election” and if you were to judge her popularity just by sales of her photobook, it sure looks like she has good chances to achieve this goal.

Meanwhile AKB48’s “General Election Guide Book” topped the weekly book chart with more than 75,000 sold copies, beating the popular mystery novel “Hazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de” – that is already in its 31st week – by around 25,000 copies.

Below you can find six more reasons why you should buy Mayuyu’s photobook, courtesy of the digital Weekly Playboy pictorial that was released at the same time as the photobook.
