Pro baseball pitcher Darvish Yu announced on March 17th a donation of 50,000,000 Yen (about $620,000 USD) to earthquake relief efforts through the Japanese Red Cross.

According to his team, Darvish commented, “As a result of thinking about what I could do for those affected by the damage, first of all I decided to donate money. I hope that it can help to save even one more person, or help reconstruction efforts along a little quicker. To the victims, I know that it’s an incredibly heartbreaking situation, but please hang on.

He also updated his personal blog in an entry titled, “What I Can Do”, on the same day. “There has been a lot of damage caused by the eastern Japan earthquake. There are a lot unbelievable scenes being broadcast on TV as well. But there’s also people being rescued, and isolated people being found as well.”

Suzuki Ichiro, although he has not yet commented on the disaster, has also donated 100,000,000 Yen (about $1.2 million USD) to the Red Cross, and the Mariners will be matching donations by fans and office staffers up to $100,000 USD.
