Saturday I had the pleasure of hosting a MidemNet panel with OK Go's Damian Kulash and Imogen Heap. Both artists have developed impressive careers in large part because of new media and social networking and without most traditional support from radio and main stream media.  Most striking was how these two view these new digital avenues as extensions of their creative process rather than as a means to broadcast to their fans. MIDEM Digital Music Future Panel – Going Cloud Or Getting Cloudy

Steve Mayall, the Managing Director, Music Ally moderated a MidemNet Saturday panel. The participants included: Thomas Hesse of Sony Music Entertainment, Christoph Lange, of German music streamer Simfy, Harry Maloney of Catch Media and Daren Tsui, the CEO & Co-Founder of mSpot. But will 2011 be remembered as the year of cloud music?

The panelists all say yes, but of course these gentleman are all based in the cloud music space.  They point to smartphones and an often superior user experience.  Tsui argued that the best services will merge the music the consumer already owns with a cloud based music. Maloney disagreed, berating Tsui's mSpot for not pre-licensing music from rightsholders (mSpot is talking to labels now) and Sony's Hesse agreed.

The controlled but heated exchange mirrors the greater industry debate on why ITunes and Google have not launched their proposed cloud music locker services.

Legal or not, none of the current streaming music services, including Spotify and his own Simfy have not done a good job of enabling music discovery, stated Lange.  "I have 8 million tracks available and I listen to a coupke of hundred.

Venture capitalist Saul Klein was interviewed by Ted Cohen at Midem on Saturday afternoon. Klein specializes in investing in music and entertainment startups like Songkick and Sonos. He says that he's learned to stay clear of companies that need to interface much with the major labels, but still sees many opportunities in the music space. The highlights:

  • "In a world of abundance what matters is the unique experience," Klein states. .
  • "We're not in a hurry to exit; we're in a hurry to build a great business."
  • "Successfule entrepreneurs don't do it for money. They succeed because they create innovative things that help people."

Forrester's Mark Mulligan

During a Saturday morning Midem presentation,  Forrester Research Mark Mulligan analyst called YouTube "music's killer app"; and sharing some new Forrester data showing that "for 12 - 15 yr olds, music is the soundtrack to social interactions". (Watch this space for a link to the full study) The key to a music industry turnaround, according to Mulligan, is for the music to get S.P.A.R.C. -

Midem Panel: 重塑Reinventing The Music Business

During the MidemNet panel hosted by marketer Virginie Berger of Don’t Believe the Hype, Jeff Castalez of U.S. based indie Dangerbird declared, "Our company is not trying to make record deals.  We're making business deals.. Instead of expensive one to many marketing, we're now working to encourage advocacy." Later in the panel he shared, "We don't care about market-share and trade press. Lawsuits and the like are distractions. We care about building a few great bands." Other highlights:

"We're all about creating a business around the artist." shared manager Emily White of Whitesmith Entertainment. "We're building the fanbase and revenue streets that can last a lifetime." One of her bands is throwing fan house parties to help finance their touring.

"What we've done is not out of some revolutionary desire to take down the man.  It was born out of necessity - a response to the current nature of the industry." - Mathieu Drouin, the manager of Metric.

Midem - Ted's Intro & Marketing To Fans Panel

Ted Cohen, in his MidemNet convention introduction set the tone well with a call for total music ubiquity and an industry shift  "from vendor like relationships to a partnership" between music services, the labels and the fans. Next, Paul of Digital Music News moderated the first panel "Marketing to Fans - The New Mix". A few highlights:


  • Artists are being asked to "rise up an an replace all that has been lost" in the music business and I'm not sure that's a reasonable expectation," said Eric Garland of Big Champagne. "We're so preoccupied with measuring social connections.... But there is often no correlation between the number of social connections and making money."
  • So many bands are doing social media that it begins to loose meaning.  "We have to help artists tell their story and make social media part of their art." - Jeremy Welt, SVP New Media at Warner Bros Records. "It's about connecting everything an artist is doing."
  • "It's almost not about what you do, but rather about what you don't do... But can you make money?" - Michael Doernberg, CEO of ReverbNation

Some, like this groggy reporter, spent last evening at dinner parties like the Midem speakers gathering at the Carlton (sightings: Imogen Heap, Ralph Simon, Red Magnet's Rachel Masters, Arial Hyatt and more). Others had the sense to get some sleep, and a few brave souls including Ian Roger's Topspin crew and veteran Seynour Stein grabbed the 7AM flight from Heathrow and are just arriving. The action kicks off at 9:30AM local time with Ted Cohen's always amusing annual intro. More as the day unfolds...
