"Lucy Schwartz literally means 'light dark,' and I tend to write that way, too," says the 20-year-old L.A. songwriter and keeper of that particular name. "Some songs seem bright and happy but the words are more thoughtful and introspective. Others feel darker, but I sound more hopeful. Sometimes you can hear both the light and dark in my voice." Second full length Life In Letters, which dropped digitally at the end of September, has been recently re-released on iTunes with two bonus tracks, most notably "Seven Hours" a fine new song featuring guest vocals from Schwartz admirer Matt Hales of Aqualung.
Produced by veteran Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney), Life In Letters is a playful romp of pure piano-driven pop, modern cabaret ditties that gleam with wit, spunk and not a small amount of theatrical presence. Not a surprise, says Schwartz: "I did a lot of theater growing up, so I like the idea of escaping into a character and becoming someone else." Balancing the mostly uptempo spring in Letter's youthful step are a handful of ballads, the music box piano delicacy of "Gone Away" and Beatle-ish album closer "Morning" offering sweet respite.
