Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter Janita (YA-nee-ta) was a teen sensation in her native Finland before heading to the U.S. to take on a more "adult" sound, mixing Sade-meets-Sting jazz/pop with a smooth rhythmic base and lush production. Signed to Sony at 17, Janita went down a well-worn path of mainstream radio-friendly formulas all the while giving flashes that there was something more interesting lurking below the glossy surface. Maybe it was her immersion in the music of more progressive and idiosyncratic artists she claims as recent important influences -- Radiohead, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey -- but the impressive Haunted presents an artist now in her early thirties with music that has a bolder, more individual style and feel.

New album Haunted adds both moody drama and ringing guitar lines to the recipe for an album both swings and sways, built on solid melodic structure and Janita's distinctive vocals. Look no further than the fine "Apologize" to understand the transformation, a powerful ballad that puts her tough/tender singing in the midst of a pulsing, gently drifting instrumental bed. "The great artists aren't afraid to grow while retaining what was unique about them in the first place," says Janita. "Those are the artists I've always admired. So with this album, I felt I had to raise the stakes for myself, regardless of the risks."




Janita Maria Ervi (née Raukko;born 28 December 1978),better known as Janita, is a Finnish smooth jazz, soul, and R&B singer–songwriter. Born in Helsinki, she started her career in Finland and later moved to Brooklyn. Janita has released five albums in her native Finland—one of which, 2001's Tunteita, was released in English to the U.S. market. Her latest album, Seasons of Life, was released in the United States on 16 May 2006 and in Japan on 21 September 2006.

According to her official website, Janita is to release a new album in autumn 2009.[3] The new album is set to be released in Finland 9.9.2009 and it's called "Haunted".


Janita recently completed a bold and honest new album, Haunted, which was released in Finland in September 2009, to be followed by releases in the US,Japan and Europe. On this album, she delves into darker territory than ever before, both lyrically and musically. Haunted displays the natural growth of a true artist, not afraid to lay herself bare.
