For Paula Cole, the intimately personal has always found a way to seep into her songs. From her earliest work -- and mid-90's pop success -- the New England singer/songwriter has tapped into her own pain and observations to bring a deep lyrical connection that has illuminated her best compositions: "Polaroid snapshots of my life", is how she succinctly describes her songs. New album Ithaca(her fifth album) , just out today via Decca, doesn't deviate from that course...or source. In many ways, her latest songs are even more confessional, a coming to grips with some difficult times -- including the ashes of a devastating divorce -- and making peace with the hauntings of the past. "My journey has healed me," she says. "and in that healing process I’ve been able to work again."

"The overall theme of Ithaca is the return to home and making peace with it," says Cole and songs such as "Music In Me" offer more than simple relationship platitudes and moon-in-June wishes. These are the complex musings of an adult woman who has seen -- and felt -- the makings and breakings of a variety of human interactions, from lover to family, husband to mother to child. While her jazz-tinged 2007 "comeback" album Courage also was a revealing and mature musical portrait, Ithaca mines the grown-up pop melodies and widescreen chorus crescendos of her earlier radio-friendly hits for an album of compelling autobiographical "pics" in Cole's distinctive songwriting style.
