The much-hyped "Peace at DMZ" concert featuring famed rock guitarist Santana has been cancelled one week before it was supposed to kick off in the city of 坡州Paju in South Korea.
The concert, fully titled "The Peace at DMZ with Artie Kornfeld, the Father of Woodstock," had been dubbed the Korean version of Woodstock, organized by Kornfeld who had masterminded the legendary American rock festival in 1969.
The concert was originally scheduled to run for three days, from August 6 to August 8, at the 임진각臨津閣和平公園Imjingak Pyeonghoa-nuri Park near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
Woodstock Korea had announced in June that the line-up for the music fest would be headlined by Santana and include rock bands Simple Plan, Mamas Gun, Smile Empty Soul, metal group Dead By Wednesday, U.S. R&B singer Keri Hilson and Japanese band Seattle Standard Cafe.
Korean artists to be featured at the event included N.EX.T, Dr.Core 911, TA Copy, Do Won-kyung, Napoleon Dynamite, Storyseller, Nevada51 and Spotlight. Some 60 singers and groups were set to show up at the concert.
According to one media report on Friday, however, Woodstock Korea has lately been involved in several legal and financial issues; U.S. firm Woodstock Ventures filed for an injunction on July 29 over the use of the name 'Woodstock' while an investor who was supposed to invest KRW two billion won for the show's 4.5 billion budget pulled out.
The lack of funds also led to the show's star performer Carlos Santana backing out of the gig as he could not be paid the guarantee for his performance.
It was further reported that Woodstock Korea sent an official statement to foreign artists notifying that the concert has been cancelled, and is planning to sue the investor for breaching the contract and calling off his investment.
There had been a series of problems surrounding the gig since the beginning stages. Foreign musicians including Santana and Simple Plan said that they had no plans to perform in Korea because they have not been paid their deposits. Korean band N.EX.T also stated that they had not singed a contract nor consented to perform.
Woodstock Korea is unable to be reached at the present time while ticket reservations for the concert has been halted. The official website (www.woodstock.or.kr) has not announced the show's cancellation as of yet.
