Sinne Eeg - "Goodbye" (from the album Don't Be So Blue)

It would appear that there's not much that Denmark's Sinne Eeg can't do. A jazz singer with a warm, supple voice...a songwriter with an extraordinary gift for subtle, naturally flowing melodies and sensitively personal but never overwrought lyrics...a producer able to find the balance between stark understatement and richly textured aural tapestries. With the release of her fifth album Don't Be So Blue recently in Europe (no U.S. date yet, alas), Eeg has conjured the creative spirits again with a collection of stunning original songs that make you wish you could hop a plane for Copenhagen and track down a live performance of Eeg and her sublime backing trio (featuring the amazing Jacob Christofferson on piano). And as a special appeal for her Scandinavian fans she also finds a place for a couple of interesting covers from the classic musical A Sound of Music: the title song and the chestnut "My Favorite Things."

"I wrote Don’t Be So Blue as a live concert," Eeg reflects. "Normally you write; record in the studio; and then go on tour. However, these songs and the bittersweet feeling came to me on a tour. We tested the songs every night in front of a live audience, and I think we captured this live feeling on the entire album." That special "in performance" atmosphere may explain the distinctive ease at play on the album, even down to the sumptuous ballads "Goodbye", "Time To Go" and the title track. Close your eyes and focus on Eeg's voice as a wordless instrument of remarkable shades and colors, navigating through the songs' melodies as an intuitive improvisational player might do. Highly recommended.
