(Reuters) - The son of former Taiwanese Vice-President Lien Chan was shot and wounded at a rally on Friday on the eve of local elections, but the shooting appeared not to be politically motivated.

Sean Lien, 40, a member of the ruling Nationalist party's central committee, was taken to hospital to undergo emergency surgery but his life is not in danger, hospital authorities told local television.

Reports said Lien was speaking at a rally for a ruling party candidate outside Taipei city when a man came up onto the stage and fired at close range, hitting Lien in the side of the face. The gunman was arrested shortly afterwards.

Media reports said the man was a member of a gang and seemed to have no political motive.

The wealthy Lien family has been prominent in Taiwan politics for decades. Lien Chan became the island's first premier from a Taiwan family in 1993, after serving as communications minister, vice premier, foreign minister and provincial governor.

In the 2004 presidential election campaign, the then opposition party candidate Chen Shui-bian was wounded by a gunshot while campaigning. He went on to win the election, but the Nationalist party said the attack was faked to win votes.

連戰子中槍射穿頭不死

今次槍擊事件，勾起台灣對6年前陳水扁選前中槍一幕的記憶，暫難斷言今次槍擊案，會否對選情有影響。副總統蕭萬長形容這是台灣民主的恥辱，連戰昨晚第一時間到醫院探視後匆匆離去，其後在國民黨台北市長郝龍斌的造勢晚會上哽咽發言。總統馬英九亦譴責這種暴力行為，下令徹查，找出元兇。

行兇前疑吸毒 或點錯相

槍擊事件發生於昨晚8時29分，連勝文當時正在新北市（台北縣）永和國小，為市議員候選人陳鴻源的造勢活動上作演講前準備。當場被捕的行兇槍手名林正偉，是當地的「古惑仔」，昨天開槍時疑有吸毒。現場消息指，連勝文在台上還沒開始講話，身穿黑衣的林正偉和另外兩人避開工作人員，有點搖晃地走上左邊的舞台，旁人還以為是想獻花致意。晚會主持人見狀，說「這位民眾請不要激動，請你可以先下去」，未料林正偉突然發難，走向站在左舞台第一位的連勝文，把他的頭往下按，近距離連開兩槍。

目擊者形容，當時槍手「壓他的脖子射他的臉」，擊中連勝文的子彈，從左邊臉頰打進去、右邊臉頰出，打中身邊29歲友人黃運聖的腦部。槍手行兇時似乎被拉了一下，未知有否因此略為射偏。從相片中看，連勝文與陳鴻源面形相似，因此一開始就有人指槍手可能「點錯相」。

子彈距腦僅一厘米

連勝文中彈後血流如注，急送台大醫院搶救，站在他身邊的黃運聖則因頭部中彈，送永和耕莘醫院後傷重不治。台大醫院發言人表示，連勝文送院時意識清醒，生命象穩定，槍傷貫穿左臉頰和右太陽穴，但沒擊中腦部，子彈距腦僅一厘米，由於顏面顱骨骨折，連勝文須立即進行手術。

連勝文受槍擊後，連戰迅即趕往台大醫院探視，逗留短短數分鐘就離開，按計劃趕往替台北市長候選人郝龍斌助場，連戰在台上含淚說，「我的兒子現在還躺在醫院裏面，情還不明，我也不要再講什話了，願老天祝福我們的國家，祝福台灣，祝福所有人，老百姓」。總統馬英九為郝龍斌助選時得知消息，馬上趕到醫院探視，對暴力事件感到憤怒和遺憾。馬英九表示，五都選舉最後一天發生這樣暴力事件，感到遺憾與憤怒。

檢90制式手槍 48發子彈

台灣警方在槍手林正偉身上起出一把90制式手槍、2個彈匣共48發子彈及空彈殼。台灣警政署長王卓鈞表示，經調查，疑兇是要對市議員候選人陳鴻源開槍，他並不認識連勝文，但會攜帶90制式手槍到現場去，「當然，我們不能說是臨時起意」。現場消息指，當時疑兇有三名，另外兩人在槍擊後逃走，警方正追緝。民進黨黨主席蔡英文強調民進黨譴責暴力，籲警方破案，也祝連勝文早日康復。蔡英文嚴正表示，幫派治安敗壞令人憂心，國民黨應負起最大責任，呼籲在真相未明前勿下斷語 ，勿做選舉的煽動及操弄等。台北市長候選人蘇貞昌發出三點聲明，他雖說要為連勝文祈福，但要求警方立即公布真相，任何人及任何政黨，勿對此做選舉操弄。

消息傳出後，震驚全國。開槍兇嫌當場遭逮捕。警政署長王卓均表示，兇嫌林正偉指稱「他不認識連勝文」，他針對候選人而非助選員。警方在兇嫌身上查獲1把90制式手槍，2個彈匣、48發子彈。

耕莘醫院表示，受流彈波及的男子黃運聖(29歲)今晚8點48分送到醫院，但到院前已無生命跡象，外傷有右眼上皮流血，右耳也流血，急救無效，宣告死亡。王卓鈞說，林嫌帶槍到會場且近距離開槍，「身體靠身體」；案發時，警方也在第一時間上前制止，案情正由永和警方偵辦中。

連勝文今晚是在準備幫國民黨籍新北市議員候選人陳鴻源助講時，發生這起不幸事件。對於兇嫌說他開槍是針對候選人，陳鴻源則表示，他不清楚為什麼會發生這樣的情況。

台大醫院發言人譚慶鼎表示，連勝文今晚8點49分由119救護車，從北縣永和耕莘醫院轉送到台大，到院時意識清醒，生命跡象穩定，他的顏面遭貫穿，左臉與右太陽穴各有一處傷口，顏面顱骨骨折，連夜進行緊急進行手術，要等手術結束，才能評估恢復狀況。

連戰今晚透過發言人表達唾棄暴力行為，希望不要再發生，希望這種傷害僅止連家，他也非常感謝全國民眾對連勝文關心。案發後，總統馬英九等人相繼前往關切連勝文與黃運聖狀況，各界同聲譴責暴力。

　【台北＝源一秀】台湾の中央通信などによると、連戦・元副総統（７４）の長男で、与党・国民党中央委員の連勝文さん（４０）が２６日夜、台北県で選挙集会に参加中に男に銃撃された。

　顔を負傷したが、生命の危険はないという。会場にいた男性１人が流れ弾で死亡した。

　犯人はその場で取り押さえられ、捜査当局が動機などを調べている。連さんは、選挙の応援演説のため登壇したところを撃たれたという。

Politician's son is critically wounded the day before Taiwanese voters head to the polls in local elections.

Taiwanese media say that the son of Lien Chan, former Taiwanese vice president, has been shot in the head and critically wounded.

The government-owned Central News Agency and other outlets say that Lien Sheng-wen was attending a campaign rally in suburban Taipei.

Taiwanese mayoral candidates were launching last-minute voter appeals on Friday ahead of local polls that could have a major impact on the president's signature policy of improving relations with China.

Voters are scheduled to go to the polls on Saturday to elect mayors and local officials in five large cities around the island.

Lien and his son are both members of President Ma Ying-jeou's ruling Nationalist Party.

Saturday's elections pit hopefuls from Ma's party against rivals from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party in three newly constructed constituencies - urban and rural agglomerations in Kaohsiung, Tainan and Taichung - as well as existing voting areas in Taipei and its suburbs.

While the perennially hot-button issue of relations with China has not figured prominently in the campaigns, Saturday's winning party is likely to carry momentum into the presidential elections in March 2012, which will almost certainly feature Ma against a still unnamed DPP candidate.

TAIPEI, Taiwan – A gunman opened fire on a campaign rally on the eve of key local elections in Taiwan on Friday, killing one man and critically wounding the son of a former vice president. A suspect is in custody and may belong to a gang.

Police said the men were hit when the assailant rushed the stage at an elementary school in the gritty town of Yung Ho, on the outskirts of the capital. A candidate for city council was apparently the intended target.

Hospital officials said that though he was shot in the face and temple, Lien Sheng-wen's life was not in danger. He is the son of former Vice President Lien Chan and a politician in his own right.

Such acts of violence are unusual in election campaigns in Taiwan, which began a gradual transition from one-party dictatorship to fully functioning democracy in the late 1980s. Violence carried out by Taiwan's gangs is also limited, though the gangs themselves exercise considerable political influence, particularly on Taiwanese county governments.

Former Vice President Lien Chan and his 40-year-old son are both members of the ruling Nationalist Party, which will meet the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party in elections Saturday that could have a significant impact on government policy of improving relations with China.

Taiwanese will elect mayors and local officials in five large cities around the island. Lien Sheng-wen was speaking on behalf of a candidate for city council - the apparent target of the crime, according to Taiwan's National Policy Agency chief Wang Cho-chiun. Police have given no motive for the attack.

A police official from Yung Ho, who asked not to be identified, said the suspect had 48 bullets in his possession when he was taken into custody. He confirmed that another man, surnamed Huang, was killed.

Taiwanese TV stations reported that the suspect is nicknamed "horse face," a sobriquet that would likely indicate his membership in one of Taiwan's criminal gangs.

After the attack, Ma rushed to Taipei's National Taiwan University Hospital, where Lien was being treated.

"Taiwan is a democracy," Ma told reporters there. "We will not tolerate such violence."

Hospital spokeswoman Tan Ching-ting said Lien was conscious when he was brought to the facility just before 9 p.m. (8 a.m. EST, 1300 GMT).

"His wounds are in his left part of his face and his right temple," she said. "He is now in surgery."

While Saturday's elections are for local seats, the winning party is likely to carry momentum into the presidential elections in March 2012, which will almost certainly feature Ma against a still unnamed opposition candidate.

Observers are carefully watching voting trends for signs of future policy initiatives toward China, from which Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.

Ma, 60, favors expanding Taiwan's already robust commercial relations with the mainland, and if re-elected in 2012, could begin political talks with Beijing.

In contrast, the opposition wants to slow the pace of economic convergence across the 100-mile- (160-kilometer-) wide Taiwan Strait and would almost certainly close the door on political dialogue with the mainland. That might worry the United States, which has applauded Ma's success in helping to ease tensions in one of Asia's traditional flashpoints.

Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) The final election rallies held by mayoral candidates around Taiwan took a sharp turn Friday night one hour before the 10 p.m. campaign deadline when prominent Kuomintang member Sean Lien was shot in the face while stumping for a county councilor candidate in Yonghe.

In Taipei City, incumbent Mayor Hau Lung-bin of the KMT asked the crowd to pray for Lien, calling him a good friend and loyal comrade.

"Taiwan's democracy is the most precious asset of this country. It is one of the most important social values that Taiwan can be proud of. But tonight, Taiwan's democracy was shamed. I must strongly denounce violence and I ask all of you to remain rational and calm, " he said.

Hau called Taiwan a land of peace and love, and he said Lien, the former chairman of EasyCard Co. and the eldest son of former Vice President Lien Chan, would not want his predicament to be the cause of any further political confrontations.

After paying a brief visit to his son who was rushed to National Taiwan University Hospital, Lien Chan went back to Hau's rally and appealed to voters to give Hau another four years.

"While I am standing here speaking to you, my son is in the hospital not too far from here. I don't have much more to say except may God bless Taiwan and its people," he said as he started choking up.

President Ma Ying-jeou also lamented the incident, saying it marred Taiwan's democracy and was an "unforgivable act."
