Hong-Kong born, San Diego-based Jane Lui could be the poster child for the new D.I.Y. independence, the essential mantra for an emerging musical performer. Her third independently released album, Goodnight Company, out digitally this week and on CD January 11, has been self-financed through fan fundraising support. Most of her recordings are done on the road and out of the traditional studio setting, utilizing mobile recording equipment and the surroundings of classrooms, churches and recital halls. “Accidents and lack of budget can give life to music," says Lui, “On location, the sound lives more vibrantly in 3-D and it has become my favorite way of working.”  But when backdrop of pruduction economics and self-made marketing strategies fade out what's ultimately on display is an exceptionally talented songwriter, gifted arranger and classically-trained multi-instrumentalist with a drop-dead gorgeous voice. Goodnight has the goods -- and ranks easily as one of the year's best finds.

Working with producer Aaron Bowen, Lui says she "let the reins go and allowed the songs to speak for themselves." True to that attitude, every song becomes singular experience each with its own mood and setting: from the cinematic, orchestrated beauty of "Perished" to the playful electro-pop propulsion of "Jailcard", the theatrical lilt of "Southern Winds" to the jazzy, horn-driven coda of the title track. Despite the lack of big production funds, this is an album of imaginative, large scale arrangements and wonderfully creative sparks.
