Sharon Little has announced the release of the Sneak Peak EP later this Fall to precede her full-length album, Paper Doll, out in early 2011.

Paper Doll is Little's first album since her 2008 critically acclaimed debut, Perfect Time For A Breakdown and her first major U.S. tour with Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnett. A live version of the album's title track is now available for FREE DOWNLOAD on http://www.sharonlittle.com/.

Within the first minute of watching Sharon Little perform, it become apparent quickly and conclusively that this is a person meant to be on stage and singing. Summoning all the drama, soul and emotion from deep within, the Philly-based singer turns nearly every number into a primer chapter on wringing each drop of sweat from a song, connecting almost spiritually with an audience and simply making it impossible not to watch her, from start to finish. With her fine 2008 debut album Perfect Time For A Breakdown and a coveted opening slot on the Allison Krauss/Robert Plant Raising Sand tour, Little tapped into a heartfelt and soulful rock/folk style with intelligent, well-crafted songwriting (with collaborator Scott Sax) and a series of much-buzzed, roof-raising live performances.

New album Paper Doll, due in early 2011 via the revived CBS Records, was produced by legendary studio man and musician Don Was (Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt) and exhibits a natural R+B feel with girl-group harmonies and a raw rock and blues edge. Lead title track has a Stones-like "Miss You" riff and hip-shaker beat, Little's vocals moving effortlessly from coy sensuality to full-throated power, moving her empowering lyrics -- questioning the image driven "Dolls" who populate the pop charts -- with her own brand of sass. We particularly like "Shake and Shiver", with tremolo guitar lines setting the stage for Little's sensuous turned incendiary singing. "This album is all me, speaking in my own voice, about my own feelings," she says. "I’ve gained confidence about who I am and how to express that with my music." Look for a teaser EP this fall; details on the full album to come.

Sharon Little got her start singing jazz and blues standards in Philadelphia clubs. That's not what she's doing here, on her first album to be released by a national label, following the self-released full-length Drawing Circles and a seven-song EP also, confusingly enough, called Perfect Time for a Breakdown. (It shares two songs with this release.) Having hooked up with Scot Sax, formerly of the band Wanderlust, she is performing all originals, and doing so in a throaty soulful and bluesy voice over lazy folk-rock arrangements. The influences of Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin can be felt, but Little is not as histrionic as either one. In fact, she is, in a way, closer to a singer like Van Morrison as she grabs onto a phrase and repeats it to create a trance-like effect. Emotions run high on her and Sax's songs, but the breakdown the title speaks of never quite arrives, as the singer seems less anguished than mesmerized by the power of love. For those who have never heard Little before, this will be a powerful debut; for the few who have been following her all along, it will seem like a breakthrough. ~ William Ruhlmann
