British singer-songwriter Leddra Chapman began playing guitar at 12, and a few years later began putting together the songs for her debut album, ...Telling Tales. Eschewing the soul influences that have infused the sound of her peers, the singer straddles the line between traditional British folk and catchy pop. The breezy "A Little Easier" combines orchestral strings with rough drums that could pass as Avril Lavigne Unplugged, while "Edie" employs evocative lyrics ("You take his breath away as you move...You paint the lines beneath your eyes, to hide the pain beneath the lines") over soothing, contemplative music. But most striking on Tales is Chapman's voice, sounding mature beyond its years and evoking the soaring folk of Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell. Like Bush and Mitchell, Chapman has a unique ability to sound ethereal while still retaining her pop sensibility, a trait that should make her relatable to both adults looking for a new chanteuse and teenagers looking for the next Avril.
