According to the official Oricon Single Ranking chart released today, AKB48’s twentieth single “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” sold an incredible 942,000 units in its first week!

The last time that a single was able to sell over 900,000 copies in its first week was when singer-songwriter Utada Hikaru sold 1,068,000 copies of her single “Addicted To You” in 1999, more than eleven years ago. As a result, AKB48’s sales are currently the highest of the 2000 era, giving the single the sixth highest first week sales in Japanese history. Like their previous hit single “Beginner,” “Sakura no Ki ni Narou.” is expected to easily exceed one million copies. AKB48 can join the pedestal of such beloved artists as Mr. Children, GLAY and B’z.

But wait, there’s more! The incredible sales of “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” also made AKB48 the female group with the most consecutive chart-topping singles in recent years, with a total of seven ranking at number one in their first week. The last female group to do so was Pink Lady, whose single “Monster” took first place in 1978 and gave the pop duo their seventh consecutive first place single.
Congratulations to AKB48 on their fantastic achievements!

AKB48 to have their own primetime TV show, “Naruhodo! High School”

Popular idol group AKB48 has just announced that they will have their own television show!
The show will be titled “Naruhodo! High School” and will begin broadcasting in April, every Thursday at 7:00 PM JST. AKB48 had previously appeared on a show of the same name last year, where the girls performed experiments to learn new things and received advice, among other short segments. Their May 30th broadcast of “Naruhodo! High School” recorded an impressive 8.0% viewer rating despite its evening time slot, while their October broadcast earned an even higher rating of 11.0%. Because of the overwhelming fan response for new episodes, the decision has been made to turn “Naruhodo! High School” into a weekly television show.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” commented Oshima Yuko on their now regular variety show. “But since they’ve always been saying ‘Aim for primetime!’ when we started the show until now, I’m really happy.” Kashiwagi Yuki chimed in happily, “It’s been my one dream to (appear on) a primetime TV show.”

In order to show the charms of the members to viewers who aren’t already AKB48 fans, the group’s name was intentionally left out of the title. Only twenty members will appear in each episode of “Naruhodo! High School” in order to focus on each girl.

“I think it’s a great chance for you to learn each of our names,” replied Takahashi Minami.”We’re going to risk everything by crossing the border of ‘idol’ and challenge it with all our might. I want to try hard so that all the viewers will be able to say, ‘Ah, I see’ (when they watch our show).”
Don’t miss the first episode of this highly anticipated new show!

With the recent news about AKB48 member Oku Manami graduating, another member of the AKB family has decided to step down. 10th generation research student, Kanazawa Yuuki, has decided to leave the group. Although she isn’t a full-fledged member of AKB48, it’s still a sad day for AKB fans.
Kanazawa left a message for her fans:
“I have requested to be excused from the AKB48 research students due to personal reasons, so as of February 20th it will be going into effect.

I’m sorry for this abrupt announcement, but Kanazawa has also thought long and hard about other possibilities before arriving at this conclusion.

And since I thought hard about this, I hope you all respect my decision.
I’m looking forward to the day when I can meet you all on this stage again.”

AKB48’s Official Blog announced that Team B member, Oku Manami, would be graduating from the group. Oku left a message for her fans, expressing her desire to go to school.

“I know this is abrupt, but I have an announcement for you all.
I, Oku Manami, will be graduating from AKB48.
I joined AKB48 when I was 10 years old without knowing anything and I’m still that way
And though I say that, I’ve continuously done my best.

It hasn’t been only good things, but I have a lot of great memories.
And I’ve made it this far thanks to Akimoto, the staff and most of all because of the fans who have supported me along the way.

I’ve been in AKB for 5 years and I’ve met a lot of people and experienced a lot of things.
I didn’t realize it until now, but somewhere in my heart I wanted to do something that I wasn’t able to do.

I really want to experience school life.
I didn’t like passing the time asking myself, “What do you really want to do?”
Through being in AKB like this, it feels like I’m only doing things half way and I’m really sorry to all the people who supported me up until now.
I’ve thought this over many times and I’ve even talked with the staff about it many times
I’m going to graduate from AKB so that I can go after my new dream, “entering university”.
Over the past 5 years I’ve caused a lot of trouble for people and I’ve caused people to worry…
But, everyone has still supported me many times after that.
I don’t know how to say this but, I really am completely grateful to you all.
Thank you so much.
The April handshake event will be the last time I can meet you all.
When the graduation details have been decided, I’ll let you all know.
Well, there isn’t much time left before I graduate, but until then, please look after me.”
