Born on Prince Edward Island and raised in Halifax, Canadian singer/songwriter Jenn Grant rose to local attention in 2005 with her jazzy, Feist-influenced folk/pop. Although originally self-released, her first EP earned Grant a contract with Paris 1919 Records, which released the full-length album Orchestra for the Moon in 2007. Grant then jumped ship for Six Shooter Records, which issued the sophomore effort Echoes two years later.
Jenn Grant is in her new party dress, she's got a hot date and she's ready for some fun. For her third full-length, the just released and perfectly-monikered, Honeymoon Punch, the Halifax NS singer/songwriter wants you to know she's in love and in a fresh, frisky mood. Grant has always worn her emotions on her (and her albums') sleeves, writing songs she philosophically calls "little reflections of my life's journey". After her fine wide-eyed folk/pop 2007 debut and '09's mostly melancholy ode to heartbreak and disappointment -- Echoes -- Grant, along with producer/beau Daniel Ledwell and an array of supporting musicians, has made an album filled with synths and the sound of girl groups, winsome 'new wave' energy and go-go-boot dance steps.
A fan of Kate Bush, Grant also became enamored of French pop/rockers Phoenix and their spangled, electrode blinking rush of upbeat, edgy songs. Getting away from what she calls "that organic sound", Honeymoon Punch's fizzy elixir of retro pop, most pronounced on opening tracks like the flashy, beat-driven "Oh My Heart" and Bangle-ish "How I Met You" that crisply set the stage for what's to come. We're immediately drawn to "Baby's Been Away", a careening, off-beat delight, as well as "Paradise Mountain"'s more subdued sweetness, a simple acoustic guitar backing for Grant's multi-tracked angelic voice. "I feel confident, self-assured and really happy," she volunteers. "I know where I'm going; I just feel like I can stomp my feet on the ground a little more."
