The music of London-based singer-songwriter and instrumentalist Phildel is both ethereal and haunting, a fusion of delicate neo-classical piano melodies and vocals that fall somewhere between angelic and ghostly. Named Phildel Hoi Yee Ng, the 26-year-old daughter of a Chinese father and Irish mother had a troubled domestic upbringing with an abusive stepfather, a harrowing time of depression and loneliness and now lyrical themes that flow through her songs in direct conflict to her music's lovely Enya-meets-Kate Bush-styled instrumental backing and blissfully airy vocals.
While at times coming across as slightly affected by its own seriousness, many of the songs on her most recent EP Tales from the Moonsea display a promising songwriter with a gift for melody, vocal arrangements and grand ideas. “My imagination is the biggest inspiration for my work,” says Phildel. “In my imagination, I guess because of my past, there’s a lot of dark imagery and sinister feelings." One of our favorites is "Storm Song", a lavish musicbox production replete with a tapestry of rich symphonic touches, a throbbing beat and Phildel's carol-like vocals. And we were immediately smitten with "Funeral Bell," an absolutely gorgeous, Celtic-folk hymn that sounds like an Enya song delivered in a stunning madrigal style. "I suppose I just feel like an open wound generally when I’m writing, and when I finish each song it heals a little bit more,” Phildel reflects. “It’s completely become my reason to live.”
