Josh Groban Lights Up "Illuminations" November 16; Listen to "Hidden Away" Illuminations is the title of multi-platinum singer (and songwriter) Josh Groban's fifth studio album, due November 16 via Warner Brothers. While Groban's singing has often landed him in the "classical crossover" category, his more recent efforts -- including new single "Hidden Away" -- and work with artists such as Imogen Heap have brought him more down to earth with a more subtle vocal style and a wider adult pop appeal. Josh Groban's fifth studio album, 2010's Illuminations, finds the vocalist working with songs informed as much by American roots music as by the classical crossover sound he helped popularize. Featuring production from famed producer Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, Metallica), the album includes many Groban originals, some of which were co-written with former Semisonic frontman and Dixie Chicks collaborator Dan Wilson. Also lending their talents here are such luminaries as guitarist Smokey Hormel, organist Spooner Oldham, arrangers David Campbell and James Newton Howard, Brazilian star Carlinhos Brown, and others.

2007年，喬許向葛萊美獎製作人Rick Rubin（*Linkin Park、Johnny Cash）提出了合作邀約，兩人各自跳脫原本所熟悉的音樂領域，Rubin在合作之初開了一堆流行經典名曲的歌單給喬許，要求喬許必須創作出超越經典名曲的歌曲，然後寫一些真正能夠表達自己情感的作品，Rubin希望喬許不再只是為金曲創作大師的歌曲發聲，而是要為自己的情感發聲。
初次接手跨界歌手專輯製作任務的Rubin從做一張具有華麗大氣、流行與藝術氣息兼顧的專輯開始發想，慢慢蛻變成做一張帶有古典音樂的氣勢與熱情，然後又在其中放進屬於美國傳統流行樂或是傳統民謠的迷人音質的專輯。喬許一直都有在嚐試歌曲創作，這回在Rick Rubin 的激勵之下，他的歌曲創作才華有了大爆發，“Illuminations”這張專輯中，有11首歌曲都是由他與Dan Wilson（*2007年以譜寫Dixie Chicks的「Not Ready To Make Nice」榮獲葛萊美獎年度歌曲大獎）一起合寫的，雙方在即興的創作靈感激盪下，完成了許多令人驚喜的作品。
專輯的首支單曲「Hidden Away」貫穿了美國傳統流行樂、民謠、古典、現代音樂與電影音樂等不同類型的音樂脈絡，喬許並在歌曲中傳達勇敢表達真我與真實感受的重要性；「Love Only Knows」這首歌有著宛如像是以民謠吉他的方式彈奏出巴哈樂曲的開場音樂，隨後轉換成華麗萬千的弦樂伴奏；「Bells Of New York City」這首寫給紐約的情歌小品，就像是一幅用五線譜所勾勒的都會風情畫，曲中有著深具戲劇性的弦樂與打擊樂器，還有一個表現紐約這座文化大熔爐的城市特質的曲調。專輯中同時也體現了喬許跨越音樂國界的魅力，像是請到創作過Shakira暢銷曲「UnderneathYour Clothes」的巴西歌曲創作家Lester Mendez，與5座拉丁葛萊美獎編曲家Carlinhos Brown所共同合作的「Você Existe Em Mim」，喬許在這首流露中南美洲音樂嘉年華氛圍的歌曲中，首度嚐試用葡萄牙語唱歌；而在「L'Ora Dell’Addio」這首瀰漫拉赫曼尼諾夫古典浪漫旋律的歌曲中，喬許則嶄露了令人難以忘懷的義大利風情。
在“Illuminations”專輯中，喬許從風格獨特的跨界美聲，轉變成唱作俱佳的全方位藝人，就連他那流行聲樂感覺的招牌唱腔都適度的調降了戲劇性，取而代之的是更為清澈、親切的情感，而這些改變將讓喬許的歌曲更加貼近樂迷的心。
On 'Illuminations,' Groban worked with veteran producer Rick Rubin, known for his critically acclaimed work with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Dixie Chicks among many others. Groban co-wrote the majority of the songs, including 'Hidden Away,' which he wrote with Dan Wilson - former leader of the band Semisonic and co-writer of several cuts on the Dixie Chicks' 'Not Ready to Make Nice.' 'Hidden Away' was recorded live with Groban singing and playing piano, Matt Sweeney and Smokey Hormel on acoustic guitars, and veteran R&B icon Spooner Oldham on organ, with a striking orchestral arrangement by David Campbell added later. The opening piano chords and the unfolding melody evoke a timeless Americana, a thread from Stephen Foster through Aaron Copland through Paul Simon and Randy Newman, as Groban makes a heartfelt plea not to hide true love or one's true self.
'Illuminations' finds both Groban and Rubin stepping out of each one's respective zone and creating an entirely new zone. The bracing result fulfills Rubin's vision of a 'fine art' Groban record, marrying the warmth of the sweeping American roots of Groban's writing and the grandeur of classical settings by matching the live, one-take performances by Groban and the intimate, core acoustic band with colorful orchestral arrangements by David Campbell and James Newton Howard.
