There is no Gregory. There is no Hawk, either. There's simply Meredith Godreau, the beguiling New York native who chose the AKA of Gregory and the Hawk to avoid being simply lumped into the "female singer/songwriter" category. After a handful of highly-buzzed self-released singles, EP's and '07 debut album, Godreau signed with the eclectic Fat Cat label (Sigur Ros, Animal Collective) for her well-received 2008 full length Moenie and Kitchi, an album that expanded her lo-fi experimental folk sound into an alternative/indie pop setting while maintaining the intimacy of her breathy, occasionally digitally-tampered vocals.
New album Leche, arriving November 9, finds the sweet spot -- literally -- between the fragile acoustic sound of her earlier bedroom works (and live sets) and Moenie and Kitchi's subtle cacophony and rhythmic ornamentation. While the stylistic experimentation that set her songs apart is still there in an array of left-of-center instrumentation and unexpected time signatures, Godreau's wispy vocals are again the primary focus, particularly on songs such as "Landscapes" and "For the Best" where lovely, ethereal melodies engage with a gentle tug. We're particularly fond of "Soulgazing", shiny gem of folk/pop that bares its tender hooks with a sunny smile.
