Vocalist Sarah Howells and guitarist Richard Llewellyn are the co-pilots for the U.K.'s Paper Aeroplanes, a scintillating neo-pop outfit hailing from the self-described "westest extremes of Wales". But extreme this Aeroplanes' flightpath is not, choosing lushly decorated and gorgeously melodic folk/pop reminiscent of Sixpence None the Richer, Sarah McLachlan or The Cardigans. Fastidiously constructed of twinkling guitar lines, piano fills and frills and Howell's breathy, lighter-than-air vocals, debut album The Day We Ran Into the Sea (October 26) boasts songs that seem of a different era, a time of innocence and candy-coated choruses, when a sprightly refrain could emanate from car stereo speakers like a spring-time gust of scented breeze.

"We're really big fans of tunes," Howell admits. "The melodies that we write – it's quite important to us that they're strong, and you can connect to them quickly." No doubt. Songs such as the immediately engaging "Not As Old" and warmly winning "Freewheel" gleam with a polished sheen as oversized hooks sink deeply into the gray matter, perfectly rendered tracks that are almost too paint-by-numbers perfect, but -- fortunately -- not quite. The cool discipline at work here is indeed impressive, songs that may dissolve sweetly on the tongue upon impact but that nonetheless provoke a wry and satisfied smile, guilty pleasures that, come to think of it, are decidedly more about the pleasure than the guilt. Video after the jump.
