Dawn Kinnard - Indescribably Blue (Live At The Borderline, London)

“I love being around people and having fun," says Dawn Kinnard. "It’s when I’m alone that the noose comes out”. It's that special flirtation with the dark underbelly of melancholy -- you can imagine her crooning softly in the middle of a David Lynch film -- that the Pennsylvania singer/songwriter and preacher's daughter brings to the songs on her sophomore album Wrong Side of A Dream (September 13, U.K.).

Kinnard's smokey voice, a quivering purr that's like a Dusty Springfield 3am whisper in your ear, has a playful lilt at times, conjuring girlish innocence in the middle of a streetwalker's alluring proposition. Hazy, half-lit imagery fills Kinnard's gothic Southern dreamscapes, a warm burn that hits the bloodstream like a smooth bourbon double -- not a pick me up, but an elixir aimed at blurry despair.

There's a bit of a Tom Waits vibe to Kinnard's music, jazzy undertones and sultry cabaret spotlight to go along with the black and blue soul, her fragile voice slinking around a note before finally hitting it. Songs such as the cold-blooded "Death Is A Shark" from Dream or noirish "Fortune Teller" (from her '08 debut) seduce the ears with lush production and moody atmospheres while "Angela", Dream's lead single (and free download) does a soft-shoe with a nocturnal stumble in the shadows, Crescent City horns locked arm-in-arm. Of note is Ron Sexsmith's guest shot on "The Silence Is Not What It Seems" and her Elvis cover (and we're not talking Costello here): "Indescribably Blue", a song that delivers heartache served on the rocks and with a twist.
