In 2009, Karen Mok released a cover album of classic Mandarin oldies entitled Hui Wei, which won her lots of acclaim and Golden Melody nominations for Best Mandarin Album and Best Mandarin Female Singer. A year later, the stylish Hong Kong singer/actress collaborates with producer Zhang Yadong again to come up with an original Mandarin album with a decidedly more touching, poetic, and subtle sound. The album lines up some of the best songwriters in the current Chinese pop scene, including Lin Xi, Francis Lee, Mac Chew, and Wu Qing Long. The titular single Bao Bei is notably unconventional in that it began with Zhang's heartfelt lyrics before the melody is composed. To bring out the pure, sweeping quality of the new album, Karen and the crew splashed over a million dollars to shoot the album cover and six music videos in Queensland, Australia.
