Confirmation of Quarter Final Decided today(last 16 game # in bracket)
(6) PARAGUAY v SPAIN (8)

Well, I get a two-day break now! The first QF is to be played on Friday 2/7. It'll be the intriguing Ghana v Uruguay game, which I'm predicting the South Americans to nick.
Watch out for my pre-QF previews on some of the games. Until then, Peace out!

FIFA President Sepp Blatter apologised for refereeing mistakes today to both England and Mexico due to the fact that dodgy decisions costed them so much. The 2 referees involved were sent home today.

Man, what a shit day of football. Why is it that the last set of ties of each round do this to us? The big games have disappointed hardcore, Spain marginally and unconvincingly beating Portugal 1-0, and then the tight-ass game which was Japan v Paraguay ended goalless after 2 HOURS of play, so penalties had to decide who'd go through. Both games were uninventive, drab, boring, there was a lack of chances and as is the trend with this World Cup, the defences are ALOT stronger than the attacks. Unless ofcourse, if you're Brazil/Argentina, or you happen to be playing against North Korea. It's annoying because it's like both teams want it so much, that they're not willing to go out there and be inventive as they are in their respective leagues, they just want to be careful not to make a mistake and go out. FIFA clearly needs a new motive in order to achieve these attacking tactics. We need more aswell. We have to wait 2 DAYS now until the 1st QF! fml. In other news, the biggest (or smallest) asshole of world football - SEPP BLATTER today apologised to England and Mexico as huge refereeing decisions cost them alot in the game. The mo'fo WILL finally discuss video technology in a meeting in July. So England, begin thinking-up your next excuse for 2014's failure now!

PARAGUAY 0-0 JAPAN-(PARAGUAY WIN 5-3 ON PENS..JAPAN ELIMINATED)

Not exactly the kind of attacking intensity that you would expect from a knockout game, with both teams looking more interested in saving themselves then going forward as the best form of defence. Either team had their chances, but clear cut ones were few and far between. Extremely. DAISUKE MATSUI, who's been amazing in all 4 of Japan's games, smashed a crossbar with a first-time long range effort in the most notable chance. As for Paraguay, LUCAS BARRIOS turned his marker brilliantly in the box before firing against the angle with his rightfoot instead of left, which would've been the better option. It ended up as an easy save. ROQUE SANTA-CRUZ was used out of position and didn't have an effect on the game, while KEISUKE HONDA was Japan's best again, but a bit more subdued than usual. There was just no creativity and a distinct lack of imagination, even from the start names. Half chances were dotted around all over the place, but penalties looked inevitable before the start of extra-time even, towards the end of the first half.

Here's a breakdown of the first penalty shoot-out in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. As a result, Paraguay have reached the last 8 for the first time ever. There are also now 4 South American sides in the last 8! Awesome!

SPAIN 1-0 PORTUGAL (PORTUGAL ELIMINATED!)

David Villa celebrates the games solitary goal in a 1-0 Spanish victory over Portugal which takes them to the QF's! This was Villa's 4th goal of the tournament so far.

Another drab match, another tough test for potential champions Spain. And it was one that they overcame, just. Again it was unconvincing. This is definitely the toughest test that the Spanish have faced so far but they came up against a mean defence. In all truth, there was no attacking panache from either team. It was built up as the showdwon between Villa & C.Ronaldo, Del Bosque & Queiroz, The Iberian, local derby. It was anything but. Passions flew high, but the football didn't exactly propel you from your seats. Villa was in and out of the game, C.Ronaldo was more out of it than in it. FERNANDO TORRES. To start, or not to start!? He's class, no denying that, but again he had little or not input. He had a curling shot well saved by Eduardo in the opening minute, and that was pretty much that. He's still injured. Villa and Xavi also tested Eduardo who looked solid. CRISTIANO RONALDO had a couple'a decent freekicks at Real Madrid teammate IKER CASILLAS and it has to be said, he looked shaky for the whole game. There's a feeling waiting to be cried out that he's not what he once was. Overrated perhaps? He also parried a Tiago shot which he then had to clear off his line, before his second-half moment when he saw Puyol's cross loop just above his crossbar. He was rooted to the spot. Spain were triggered by these Portuguese chances. The ineffective Torres was soon replaced by namesake FERNANDO LLORENTE who looked sharper, quicker and more effective straight away. He had that fot presence about him. He soon had Spain's first real chance, heading a cross straight at Eduardo. Surely he has to start against Paraguay!? Soon enough, the Spanish confidence paid off. Xavi rolled in a ball to DAVID VILLA who just stayed onside and saw his first effort blocked, before looping in the rebound off the bar and celebrating wildly. I guess it was coming. Llorente had another chance afterwards, SERGIO RAMOS who was amazing yet again also went close with a low shot. Maicon who!? Ronaldo and Portugal had all but nothing. Apart from a Red Card to rub salt into wounds. JOAN CAPDEVILA - the worst leftback in this tournament and a real liabilty for this solid Spanish defence, dived while jumping with RICARDO COSTA and fell to the ground like he'd been shot. The twat. Spain still deserved their win, but like Holland, they need to start turning on the style now. Graft will beat Paraguay to the semis, but may not be enough to beat Argentina and Brazil. Portugal won't be forgotten quick. The 7-0 victory over N.Korea, and the emergence of FABIO COENTRAO who was classy again today. Spain for the semis!!!
