TOMORROW: FIFA World Cup 2010. Day 5 Match Analysis.

Zee Monday, June 14th, 2010

Paul le Guen spoke too soon about matching the Cameroon team of the 1990 FIFA World Cup which reached the Semi Finals.

Another day, another 3 games, and 3 more huge talking-points. The Dutch were far from amazing against Denmark, but will their ability to grind out results get them far this time round? Second favourites for the group Cameroon were shocked by a spirited Japanese side, and World Champions Italy start off slow again...

NETHERLANDS 2-0 DENMARK

The Dutch were expected to out-class a mixed bag of a Danish team, but this game was far from a trouncing. The likes of Rafael van der Vaart and Nigel de Jong should've stayed at home on this evidence for the Dutch, who only won the game in the end due to the tenacity of their classy technical players. A Man-of-the-Match performance by Arsenal hitman ROBIN van PERSIE saw him display his finest throughball and crossing attributes, but none better until a minute into the second half when his cross eventually bounced in off Liverpool's DANIEL AGGER to finally give the Dutch the lead. This was far from deserved, and Denmark showed resilience afterwards but this 'Dutch of class', who have newly displayed how they can grind out results, scored a second 5 minutes from time when the pacy, fast and effective sub ELJARO ELIA'S shot hit the post only for Liverpool Striker DIRK KUYT to be on hand for a tap in. Elia'a awesome, so if he gets anymore chances, keep a look out. Wesley Sneijder showed some good touches as usual. The Dutch will be back in full flow once ARJEN ROBBEN is back to full fitness. In terms of the Danish, NICKLAS BENDTNER had a couple of good chances to score, and Agger was solid apart from his own goal. SB Poulsen was SHITE. The way things are looking, the Danish are still heading the shitter while the Dutch can only get better!

JAPAN 1-0 CAMEROON

What a shocker. Yet again, as Maheen would say, Zee fucked up! I actually thought that the Japanese were a poor side on balance of everything and that they didn't have a chance to get through this group, let alone anything else. Arsene Wenger shared my opinion! But Paul le Guen's side underestimated the Japs more than anyone. Cameroon looked flat and flustered throughout, and I know that they still have 2 games to go, and that the 1st game is always rusty, but this was beyond rusted. It was as if the Cameroonians had already caught the tetnus and been jaw-locked in shock by a solid and spirited Japanese side, from back to front. TANAKA was solid at the back, MATSUI'S a great crosser of the ball, OKUBO did his job really well by thwarting Tottenham Hotspur's BENOIT ASSOU-EKOTTO out of the game and finally KEISUKI HONDA showed a great striker's instinct to poke in a ball that the shitty Cameroonian defence failed to clear. Boom! No further goals in the second half, just brilliant defence and counter by Japan when they could as Cameroon pressed them into their own half the whole time. But they held on. Stephen M'BIA had a shot crashing off the bar, JEAN MAKOUN was Cameroon's best. Always in control but he's not there to score goals. The guy that is, Captain and star-man SAMUEL ETO'O probably had 10-12 touches in the whole game. Poor and uninfluential. Le Guen was the biggest loser, though. He didn't use midfield lynchpin ALEX SONG to sure up the back and underestimated the Blue Samurai! Long way to go until 1990, mon amie! God knows who's getting through on this evidence!

ITALY 1-1 PARAGUAY

World Champions. 4 Years ago. They won't be anymore. Fine, in 2006 they drew, ironically, 1-1 against the USA and then went on to win the tournament. They're just not as strong as those divers anymore! A poor first-half was dominated by a midfield battle between Italy's DE ROSSI and Paraguay's CACERES. Paraguay, like Japan, showed spirit and that South American class which is why I said that they'd eventually get through this group. They actually took the lead. ANTOLIN ALCARAZ, who's earned himself a move to the EPL next year, was sublime in defence and reached highest to head home TORRES'S awesome delivery. 1-0 Paraguay. TORRES should look for the Premiership too based on tonight. His wing play was awesome. We need to see that somewhere in the best league, and soonish!

Italy looked lost, and similar to the Cameroon-Jap game, came out all guns blazing in the second half, but actually managed to score as well. DANIELE DE ROSSI was on-hand to tap in a corner missed by the goalie Villar. Italy's 2 best players were SIMONE PEPE who's breathtaking skill, pace and midfield control stablilised a nervous-looking side. And RICCARDO MONTOLIVIO looked dangerous throughout aswell. Italy - buck up! I doubt you need reminding. And I told y'all that Paraguay are good enough to get through! Stay tuned!

Alcaraz of Paraguay has to literally bum an Italian to score a goal. His team proved their point, however!
