As the title of her forthcoming July 20 album 100 Miles from Memphis would indicate, Sheryl Crow grew up in the lengthy shadow and radio airwaves of that legendary music town. Known for it's country, blues and early rock and roll via the legendary Sun and Muscle Shoals studios, Memphis was also a mecca for what she calls the "southern soul and hard-edged R+B" of Stax and Atlantic Records and artists such as Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Booker T and the MG's and Wilson Pickett -- a style she taps into for her new "funky, soul-based record." The fact that Crow began her career as a singer -- touring as a back up vocalist for Michael Jackson for a couple of years -- prior to her own multiplatinum success is reiterated on 100 Miles' dynamic, groove-driven tracks.

With the help of producer/guitarist Doyle Bramhall (Eric Clapton) and Justin Stanley, Crow brings her own "old soul" spin to original songs such as lead track "Our Love Is Fading" and piano ballad "For the Sake of Love" as well as a few choice covers including the Redbone classic "Come and Get Your Love", Terence Trent D'Arby's "Sign Your Name," and the rare Marvin Gaye song, "Desperate Situations." "I feel artistically revitalized and the music feels fresh and at the same time very familiar to what I do,” Crow writes on her website. Sheryl Crow gives us a bit of soul on ‘Summer Day’
June 3rd, 2010

Last week we gave you a little preview of a new Sheryl Crow song ‘Our Love Is Fading’ on Facebook (where we happen to post lots of random bits; so follow us!), and today she premiered her new single ‘Summer Day‘ on her website. The new single sees Sheryl take on a soulful sound, similar to ‘My Favorite Mistake’; a song we’ve always been very fond of.
‘I feel artistically revitalized and the music feels fresh and at the same time very familiar to what I do,” says Crow in a letter to her fans posted on her website this week. “Many of my past songs such as “Run Baby Run,” “My Favorite Mistake,” “Now That You’re Gone” and others are already steeped in this style.”
Crow’s 7th studio album 100 miles from Memphis is out 19th July (20th in the US) and she will be touring this summer to support the album.

Sheryl Crow is putting the final touches to the eagerly awaited new album 100 Miles From Memphis and there is some news around that is exciting and bizarre. The singer is allegedly covering a song made popular in the UK by Eternal. It’s called “I Am Blessed” and we remember it coming out but we thought it was too templated and geared towards the ballad market. Some critics compared it to Whitney Houston, but we though it was bland. So, we are curious as to why Sheryl is covering that song. At any rate, the last time someone covered an Eternal song they scored the top spot on the Billboard Charts. That was when Monica did “Angel Of Mine.” So, good luck to her.
