Five seconds into "Alone With My Troubles" it becomes pretty obvious that New York singer Chrissi Poland has one of those special voices, an extraordinarily soulful instrument capable of channeling deep emotion and stunning interpretive powers. But what might not be noted without some bio info is that Poland is also a gifted songwriter who can translate her own personal lyrical perspective into classic-sounding rhythm and blues. On her seven song EP Songs From The Concrete, Poland has also assembled a stellar group of supporting jazz players including pianist John Cowherd and drummer Brian Blade who give her debut an elegant and polished feel while maintaining a loose and funky groove.

Pulled into the classic soul of Aretha and Donny Hathaway as well as the R+B flavored pop of Dusty Springfield, Poland -- who has sung with everyone from Sam Moore to Moby -- was also drawn to the songwriting prowess of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor and her songs mirror that special duality. "Troubles" as well as the gospel-flavored ballad "Angel Weep For Me" and the quietly incendiary six-minute blues workout "Caught Between" all deliver more chills when you realize that the singer is also presenting her own remarkable songs. Set for an independent May 13 release, Songs From The Concrete is a knockout reminder of how rootsy soul music is supposed to sound. Highly recommended.
