Neo-traditional U.K. folk melodies and harmonies that seem plucked from the English country side come up against the dark, haunting underbelly of American blues, drifting psychedelic-era guitar lines and mountainside Americana with Ghosts, the oddly compelling and blissfully incongruous April 13 debut from Brit duo Smoke Fairies. Childhood friends who began writing and performing together in school, Jessica Davies and Katherine Blamire began in the world of classic folk but quickly began to bring in more American elements, from swampy blues to alt-country shadings strung from Texas to Appalachia. But it was an extended stay amidst the earthy club scene in New Orleans that helped Smoke Fairies hone their own particular, genre-bending sound.

It seems only fitting that the Ghosts story would be launched in the U.S. via an opening slot in May on the upcoming Laura Marling tour, another Brit-folk singer/songwriter who has led the revival of traditional acoustic melodies and shadowy, ethereal melancholy. After a one-off pair of songs for fan Jack White and his Third Man label, Smoke Fairies have pulled together a series of well-received singles and an EP tracks for the nine song Ghosts. Echoing the ethereal madrigal harmonies of The Webb Sisters, Davies and Blamire are at their best when they dirty things up a bit with eerie guitar and loping echoed bass lines, adding a touch of menace to the Londoners' renaissance folk traditions. Songs such as "Living With Ghosts" and "Sunshine" have an acoustic Zeppelin feel, with Pentangle and Fairport Convention nuances submerged in a haze of dreamscape wanderings. Recommended.
