WMG Reports營業利潤下降 34% Drop In Operating Income

Early this morning Warner Music reported it's last quarter's earnings to Wall Street. There was little good news in the report accpet perhaps that the major label group did not do worse then many analysts predicted.


  • Wmg Total revenue of $878M decreased 11% from the prior-year quarter
  • Digital revenue hit $171M (19% of total revenue) up 2% from the immediately previous quarter and up 20% from $142 million in the prior-year quarter
  • Operating income from continuing operations declined 34% to $41M compared to $62M in the prior-year quarter
  • Operating income before depreciation and amortization from continuing operations fell 17% to $107M. Income from continuing operations was $.15 per diluted share compared to income from continuing operations of $0.01 per diluted share in the prior-year quarter.
  • The quarter included a gain of $.24 per diluted share from the gain on the previously disclosed sale of a minority stake in Front Line Management contributing to a cash on hand balance of $549M.

持續虧損 Losses Continue As EMI Pays The Piper

EMI Losses at EMI narrowed to $221 million (155 million pounds) in the last six months compared to $462 million (324 million pounds) in the previous half year. The company achieved the improved results despite a falling economy in part by slashing 1500 jobs.

But the debt which new owner Terra Firma took on purchasing EMI is the major cause of the continuing red ink. Financing charges in the last half year period were $214 million (150 million pounds). Interest on the debt of $3.43 billion ( (2.41 billion pounds) accounted for $178.4 million (125 million pounds) or slightly more than 80% of total losses. Additional pressure could come from primary lender CitiGroup which has troubles of its own, and has shown signs of impatience with EMI's progress in the past.

Digital revenues were a bright spot moving up 38% to $145 million (102 million pounds). CD sales declined 8%.



41% Music Decline Helps

Sony Profits Fall 95%

Sony Sony posted a whopping 95% decrease in profits last quarter compared to the same quarter last year. Gaming was was the biggest disappointment down 97%, but music did its part to contribute to the downward spiral. Even when factoring out the expensive purchase of BMG's half of the former Sony BMG, music profits declined 41% driven by a 22% decrease in sales.

Sony has avoided the recent wholesale staff cuts made by other labels favoring more targeted layoffs. But as losses mount and the world economy worsens, sources hint that Sony's layoff scalpel could become a hatchet.

YouTube Grabs 41% Share With 100M Viewers

78.5% of the U.S. internet audience viewed online video.

The average online viewer watched more than 5 hours.


Youtube In December, Google and YouTube once again ranked as the top U.S. video property with 5.9 billion videos viewed accounting for 41% of the total online video market. Fox Interactive Media ranked a distant second with 445 million videos (3.1%), followed by Yahoo! sites with 330 million (2.3%) and Viacom Digital with 291 million (2.0%). Hulu continued climbing and was up 6% vs. November to 241 million videos viewed.

YouTube Surpasses 100 Million Viewers


Nearly 150 million U.S. Internet users watched an average of 96 videos per viewer in December. Google Sites surpassed 100 million online video viewers during the month, representing two out of every three Internet users who watched video. Fox Interactive ranked second with 56.9 million viewers, followed by Yahoo! Sites (42.8 million) and AOL LLC (31.5 million).

Other notable findings from December include:


  • 98.9 million viewers watched 5.9 billion videos on YouTube.com (59.2 videos per viewer).

  • 48.7 million viewers watched 367 million videos on MySpace.com (7.6 videos per viewer).

  • The duration of the average online video was 3.2 minutes.

  • The duration of the average online video viewed at Hulu was 10.1 minutes, higher than any other video property in the top ten.
