出生於麻薩諸塞州全名James Vernon Taylor，在孩童時期就學習大提琴，後來改學吉他，高中就讀時跟哥哥合組樂團。James曾以Flying Machine之名發了一張不紅的單曲，帶著失望的心回到紐約，藉由毒品麻醉自己，一通緊急電話讓父親救了他一把，對此寫下一首感念歌曲，重拾起對音樂的熱誠。1968年到倫敦錄了一些DEMO引起製作人Peter Asher注意，穿針引線與披頭四剛成立的Apple Records簽約，發行一張銷售不佳的同名專輯，回到美國後，1970推出《Sweet Baby James》專輯，受到AMG與滾石雜誌五星滿分好評，入選滾石雜誌「500張經典專輯」第103名，VH1則選此輯為「傳世經典專輯」第77位元，金氏流行音樂百科評選為「最佳療傷專輯」亞軍，單曲＜Fire And Rain＞登上流行單曲季軍，終讓Jamest嚐到成功的滋味。接著1971-2003年間拿下五座葛萊美獎，2000年分別進入「搖滾名人堂」以及「詞曲創作名人堂」，至今仍在唱片公司與樂迷大力支持下持續發行新作。
