Royal Treatment Plant - Hope Is Not Enough

A London-based five-piece, Royal Treatment Plant have been paying their dues on the club circuit for long enough. With a bit of luck, 'Hope Is Not Enough' will be enough to lift them into public view. The album opens with the title track, a furious, rattling tune based around snarling guitar riffs and crashing drums. Singer Paula's voice is at times delicate, at other times strident and piercing, and this dislocation is an ongoing theme to the album.

Full-on power guitar indulgence sits side by side with gentle, introverted explorations of the self. It would be easy to get this mixture wrong, creating an album with no flow or coherence, but Royal Treatment Plant turn that into a virtue. Comparisons are difficult due to the large variance from song to song. Nina Persson, Melissa Auf de Mer, Debbie Harry, Siouxsie Sioux. There are influences from all these classic pop-punk goddesses on display, but none could be described as being prominent.

Despite the honeyed vocals, the songs are about loss and hurt. Stand out song 'You Don't Need Me' is a great example: "wish I could bring you down boy/peel your face from the back of my mind". Guitarist DJ's fast fingers offset the simple bass line perfectly, leaving Paula to weave her narrative over the top. There is real visceral feeling here, and it is irresistible.

Some of the more low-key moments on the album do not work so well. Last song 'Pricey' is not the obvious choice to end the experience, being more of a whimper than a bang. However, even this is not such a bad thing. The last thing you hear on this album is Paula's siren call, ensuring it won't be long until you come back again.

Royal Treatment Plant's biggest strength is their biggest weakness. Their music is a perfect balm to those bored of the current crop of carbon-copy indie boys. Unfortunately, it is difficult to see much space in the charts for such chaotic and evocative madness.
