We like the fact that L.A. band Young the Giant play fast and loose with the concept of fast and loose on their eponymous debut album (January 25, Roadrunner). Sophisticated, high-energy indie rock braced with melodious pop overtones makes the band something of a scruffier version of more blatantly commercial bands like Maroon 5 (version 1.0) or a leaner, less mannered take on the poly-rhythmic cool-kids running the Vampire Weekend route. They may gravitate to the intricate and finely-tuned in their studio work, but they can still unleash a potent and physical rush of highly charged power live, as they've proved opening for The Whigs and Kings of Leon.
Working with highly regarded producer Joe Chiccarelli (White Stripes, My Morning Jacket), Young the Giant have the instrumental chops and energy to burn on songs like the vibrant, stutter-step beat of "I Got It" or the shimmering jangle and splayed timings of "Strings", melodies writ large and bright, frontman Sameer Gadhia finding the sweet spot of comfort and edge in a voice that rises assertively from a backdrop of rich harmonies. “Young the Giant draws on European and Middle Eastern roots to enrich its vivid, vibrant rock", states radical pop culture rag The Wall Street Journal, "their superb self-titled debut album that rings with unexpected arrangements and tasty vocal harmonies. It's a pop masterpiece…"
