TOMORROW: FIFA World Cup 2010: KNOCKOUT STAGE DAY 1 REVIEW!
Confirmation of Last 16 Games Decided today (Group letter/position):
(G1) BRAZIL v CHILE (H2)
(H1) SPAIN v PORTUGAL (G2)
Focus of the Day: Hot Brazilian fan! In a day of football that would be best forgotten when most teams already knew their fate, we look at the finer side of life today. Just Kiddin'! But seriously - what a disappointing day of football!
Lacklustre. That's the only word that I can think of regarding today's games. On paper, you would've expected an exciting day. In reality it was anything but. Even the one game that would probably get you out of your seats due to some of the most hardcore, attacking players in the world (Braz v Port.) failed to live up to any sort of high standards at all. Fine, maybe most of these teams already knew their destiny but who gives a crap!? Tell that to the people who've travelled half way around the World for you to show off your DEFENSIVE skills! Group G played first, and all eyes were literally on the Brazil-Portugal game. No flair, no skills, no class...no goals. It was actually a yawner! Brazil finished top to Portugal's 2nd and both go through, while Ivory Coast's 3-0 demolishing of a disillusioned North Korea wasn't enough to help them through. Last week's 7-0 drubbing took care of that! Group H saw even more boring football...Switzerland (one of the best defences ever) 0-0 Honduras (worst attack ever). Yeh, so I didn't even watch that game, both are out now anyways thank God! More importantly, Spain got the win that ensured that they won the Group - a 2-1 success over Chile, who finished second. LAST 16 GAMES BEGIN TOMORROW GET EXCITED!
GROUP G-
PORTUGAL 0-0 BRAZIL (BOTH TEAM INTO LAST 16!)
Surprise, Surprise! A tackle! The most free-flowing game of football turned into an anti-climax as it was themost defensive game yet, Portugal and Brazil drawing 0-0!
Still wondering why this game of the best attackers ever finished 0-0!? Same. And I don't really know why either. Maybe because both defences were tight as hell, and Brazil didn't have their 1st choice attack pairing on the pitch for various reasons. They played a 4-5-1 formation and were camped in Portugal's half without doing anything. Portugal looked to hit on the counter but had a frustrated looking CRISTIANO RONALDO isolated alone upfront. Basically, both teams were prepared as being so scared of the other, that both their games were about stopping the other from scoring, and not necessarily scoring themselves. Yes, we are talking about Portugal-Brazil and defensivness. Losers. I personally think that on this evidence, this was Portugal's penultimate game of the competition. Most of their 1st teamers played and were crap. Brazil, once ROBINHO, ELANO & KAKA return will be amazing again. They were sorely missed today and with all their posession, those 3 could'a won it for them potentially. The players who did start instead for Brazil did okay, but not enough. It was patchy. NILMAR of Villarreal was the 1st half's standout player, he was quick, sharp and alert always and caused Carvalho and Bruno Alves to be on their guard, which they were on for the most part. Nilmar also had the best chance of the half - his shot being superbly saved by gaolie EDUARDO onto the post. Portugal's defence was efficient, as well Brazil's marshalled by the colossal LUCIO, arguably the best centre back in the world. Ronaldo was reduced to long-rangers, but most of the time, Lucio didn't even allow those. The second half stayed as tight as the first. RAUL MEIRELES who was quiet all afternoon had a one on one chance that was blocked well by Cesar. One of the biggest talking points in this game, other than how surprisingly shit it was, was the amount of yellow cards dished out in one half - 7 in total. They may not have been at their best attackingly, but this Porto-Brazilian rivalry will never die. PEPE of Portugal and the awesome FELIPE MELO of Brazil were taken off for this very reason - to save them from being suspended next time out. Pepe's a crazy asshole. He would'a been sent off had he not been subbed. Consistancy wise, left-backs are always great players, and with no clear cut chances the two on show today got to show their skill in a defence-minded game. The attackers were subdued so my 'men' (plural intended) of the match were MICHEL BASTOS of Brazil who got forward well, and the man I told you to look out for last time - Portugal's FABIO COENTRAO - sublime play again. GILBERTO SILVA was wiked too. In equal measure im'a call out the two shittest players on each team as there's virtually nothing else to report. Brazilian JULIO BAPTISTA showed why he's always on the bench - a horrific performance, he gave the ball away like it was a bomb. Equally, Portugal's DANNY is the most useless player ever, and proved why he was dropped after the first game. These 2 need to, and probably will pick it up for the last 16. Brazil will beat Chile, Portugal won't beat Spain. Mark my words. KAKA, ROBINHO & ELANO HURRY UP AND RETURN!
NORTH KOREA 0-3 IVORY COAST (BOTH ELIMINATED!)
C'IV celebrate Yaya Toure's opener in a 3-0 win against N.Korea, ultimately not enough to get them through.
By far the game of the day. The Ivory Coast just had it all against them on the day because of North Korea's 7 goal failure last week, making the goal difference impossible to make up. C'IV showed great composure, desire and a certain Drogba-esque swagger from the word 'go' today. It came naturally - they weren't exactly playing top class opposition. N.K.'s defence just gave in, probably still in shock from their last game. Every time C'IV got forward, they looked like they were gonna score. DIDIER DROGBA had a goal ruled out for offside, before the magnificent YAYA TOURE finally gave them a deserved lead on 14, by which time they could've made up that goal difference! Toure II curled in a low effort from the edge of the penalty area. Sharp finish. It was 2-0 just 6 minutes later, goal difference what!? Drogba's rocket shot after a great turn cannoned off the underside of the bar only for ROMARIC to head in the rebound. They had 70 minutes to score 4 times this amount and hope Portugal lost. Bet against it at your will! It stayed this way till half-time however. It could've been more but GERVINHO who has to move onto a bigger club after his amazing performances didn't have those shooting boots on today. He was subbed for SALOMON KALOU in the second half, who added a 3rd for gloss, dinking over the keeper well after a cross, being one on one. Game over, and only one African nation left now..Ghana. Ivory Coast have battled well this time round so deserve credit. EMMANUEL EBOUE was class in the second half. Sven quit as coach after no Quarter Final this time. As for North Korea, cheers for the memories...lets hope you're all still alive this time next week as we see who gets to the Quarters!
GROUP G-
CHILE 1-2 SPAIN (CHILE FINISH 2ND, SPAIN 1ST!)
SuperStar David Villa celebrates his superb goal.
小白伊涅斯塔被压
Far from convincing, far from entertaining. The Spanish will need to up their game big time now that they know they're facing Portugal in the last 16. On today's evidence, Portugal were crap so Spain will probably do it, but the swagger and fluency of the team that won Euro 2008 is diminishing fast. There were times in the 1st half when Chile's attacking play pressed so hard that David Villa and the disappointing Fernando Torres were simply out of the game. Nowhere to be found at all. It was individual brilliance and glimpses of class that got the Spanish the win today. The opening 20 minutes, possibly even more, were played in the Spanish half with Chile going all-attack under Bielsa's policies. ALEXIS SANCHES & JEAN BEAUSEJOUR were effective and quick again, but to no avail as GERARD PIQUE in particular was outstanding in the Spanish defence, which had to be solid. Chile didn't take advantage of their prime-time. They were almost so desparate to stop any rare Spanish attacks that their discipline gave way pretty much. Ponce, Medel and most importantly ESTRADA will not play in the last 16 against Brazil now, for 2 bookings and a red-card, respectively. Although Chile beat Brazil twice in the qualifiers, their weakened squad won't be able to cope with a Brazilian one going from strength to strength. Estrada's sending off seemed harsh, but most of them have been this time round. Spain's lead was against the run of play. Pique hoofed a ball forward which seemed harmless, Torres chasing after it. After the goalie Bravo came out for no reason, he cleared to DAVID VILLA who looked up, saw an unguarded net and curled in a stupendous left footer over the goalie trying to run back. Amazing finish, 'Goal of the Day', and it was his weaker left foot. My player of the Tournament so far. XAVI and the fit again ANDRES INIESTA took control only after the sending off, showing how poor Spain were today at times. It was Villa nd Iniesta that linked up to make it 2-0 however. A brilliant attacking run by the two, resulting in a one-two saw Iniesta take a first time effort that nestled into the bottom corner. Hardly deserved.
Changes were imminent for the second half, and immediately, Chile sub RODRIGO MILLAR scored, only a minute in. Chile sttacked straight out, and Millar's optimistic effort looped in past Casillas with a huge deflection off of Pique. Game on. The ineffective FERNANDO TORRES, probably still injured, was taken off soon after, for CESC FABREGAS, who didn't look 100% himself. One goal would've taken Chile to the summit now but Spain's defence was stronger now than ever. Villa was alone upfront now and enjoyed the challenge, with Cesc just behind him. The game petered out though, both teams guessed their fate and chilled out after an action-packed yet unconvincing 1st half. Chile will have to pick themselves up for Brazil, and although they'll lose, you can tell they'll put up a fight. Spain will probably beat Portugal aswell, and if they do it's not because of Del Bosque's aweful tactics, but more due to the awesomeness of the squad-inviduals, who can pull it out of the bag whilst playing poorly. Villa's the main man for them, and for Chile, watch out for sub PAREDES, always a menace, along with the usual suspects! Some awesome ties in store for us!
SWITZERLAND 0-0 HONDURAS (BOTH ELIMINATED!)
單調 Drab game, Drab players, Drab scoreline. Switzerland 0-0 Honduras.
The Swiss needed to win 2-0 and hope that Spain didn't win, but neither happened in the end. Great defensively but lacking substance attackingly, Switzerland had the chances in this game but watched it fizzle out infront of their eyes by wasting a game that they dominated. Honduras played decently to begin with, for pride after already exiting the Tournament post-last weeks 2-0 defeat to Spain. Eventually the Swiss settled down, and TRANQUILLO BARNETTA was awesome, and involved in everything good. He took some range-finders as well as trying to tee-up his team mates, but nothing was happening. The Swiss needed to attack but did so cautiously. Anytime they did, they let Honduras attack on the break, leaving huge gaps open in defence. DAVID SUAZO, Honduras's main man had a couple of decent chances, equal to the Swiss, but nothing was happening in this drab last game for these two, even after Alex Frei came on. Switzerland's 1-0 success over Spain seemed like ages ago, but Hitzfeld can take that away atleast as a memento. Honduras had nothing, not even a goal to their name and literally made up the numbers. Two teams less for me to write about!
