Thailand's National Police Bureau on Thursday established an identification centre after over 25 bodies of fire victims at a luxurious nightclub here which caught fire early on New Year's Day were burned beyond recognition, according to a senior police officer.
Pol. Lt-Gen. Danaithorn Wongthai, Chief of the Office of Police Forensic Science, said the centre was set up at Thong Lor police station, near the Santika Club.
The area around the club in Ekamai Soi 9, a popular site for nightowls, has been declared a disaster zone.
General Danaithorn said relatives of the deceased victims should bring dentistry records, fingerprints or DNA along with them so that officials could compare with the bodies they are as yet unable to identify.
Bangkok Metropolitan Adminstration (BMA) has begun setting up an assistance centre to help the victims and their families who suffered from the fire, according to Bangkok City Clerk Pongsak Semsant.
Mr. Pongsak said the assistance centre was being set up at Wattana district office to coordinate with the victims' relatives both of the dead and injured, focusing in part on the injured clubbers who are populating 14 hospitals nearby.
The centre would also coordinate arrangements for victims who wished to return home or change to other hospitals.
The club was promoting the New Year's party as "Goodbye Santika" night because the pub owner was planning to move to a new location since the lease on the site could not be extended.

Santika pub: Prophetic moments
FR:Bangkok of the mind
The Santika pub, where 59 revellers perished in a fire on New Year's Eve, kept a cross on one wall, and a casket below it (see image).
At the pub's website yesterday, a small flame burned next to new messages on a noticeboard.
It was just an animated graphic, but visitors to the site urged organisers to take it down, for the sake of propriety.
People were burned or trampled to death as they tried to escape a fire at the pub just hours before - can't you have some respect?
Police say they can't find the owner. Maybe he's the only one with the password to the site.
The Manager newspaper spoke to two DJs who were working at the pub that night. They made it out soon after the second-floor ceiling, covered with foam sound-proofing, caught alight.
DJ duo Poom and Petja thank monks and deities they believe in for getting them out safely. Or was it just because that as performers there, they knew about the tradesman's exit at the rear?
Almost everyone else rushed for the main exit at the front, and were trampled or suffocated on their way there.
The same newspaper spoke to actor 'Dan' Danai Samutkochorn, a frequent visitor to the pub who owned a 5% share in the business which ran it. Journalists have asked him: 'How will you take responsibility for what happened?'
He says he was not involved in the management of the place, so - 'Not much'! On New Year's Eve, he decided to celebrate at a friend's home, rather than going to the pub as was his habit. He's another one thanking his lucky stars that was he wasn't caught in that fatal blaze.
He can't understand why anyone would light fireworks or pyrotechnics on stage - if that is indeed what happened to cause the fire.
Some eyewitnesses say they recall no fireworks on stage, but claim that revellers were given sparklers as they entered the place to help them celebrate New Year - and at the same time, mark Santika's last opening night at those premises.
In another spooky note, the theme for the New Year's Eve party was called 'Goodbye Santika'. The owner was unable to renew the lease on his Ekamai Rd premises, so was closing the pub before supposedly opening at a new location.
Santika was built for B40m, and was relaunched only 18 months ago for another B20m.
Details remain vague, which has only encouraged speculation. Insurance fraud, anyone?
Nightclub fire tragedy
Thursday, January 01, 2009
How can this kind of tragedy happen in this day and age in Bangkok?
Fifty-nine people died in this morning's fire at the B40m Santika pub in Ekamai/Thong Lor.
Overseas media play up the fact that it is an upscale pub and restaurant, the biggest in that trendy Bangkok district. Owners spent B20m doing it up for a relaunch 18 months ago, as it entered its fourth year of business.
At least one foreign tourist was among those who perished in the blaze at the two-storey pub and nightclub - the rest were Thais.
Soon after midnight, someone lit pyrotechnics or firecrackers, which took off with more ferocity than expected, setting alight sound insulation foam in the ceiling.
'Fire!' revellers shouted.
That didn't help. It set off a mad rush for the exit - though revellers upstairs, and in the basement below, had to scale a narrow staircase to reach it. The place had two exits, including a trade exit at the back. Most people headed for the main one.
The bodies of many revellers were found just inside at the entrance, Thai news report say. They perished as they fought their way through the crowds to get out.
Police, who inspected the rubble of the pub this morning, say most victims died from smoke inhalation and being trampled and crushed to death.
More than 1000 revellers were seeing in the New Year when the blaze started - the last night before it was due to close. Thai TV reports say a free CD - and sparklers - were handed out to revellers, to mark its last night in business before it moved to a new location. Regulars turned out in force, swelled by crowds wanting to see in the New Year.
More than 200 were injured, and taken to hospitals around Bangkok. The list of casualties is likely to grow, according to doctors speaking on television at midday. Up to 30 more bodies are still unidentified.
May I express my condolences to the families of those who lost love ones.
