" The Flaming Lips早已公推是後判客年代最具原創性的樂隊,而對於這種已有歷史定位的,總不免覺得他們接下來的工作大約便是守成,難再有什麼驚天動地、驚世駭俗的突破。尤其The Flaming Lips從八○年代中期的美式獨立噪音搖滾一路脫胎換成近期的新迷幻風骨,其始終豐盈的創意與大團氣勢,已經夠讓眾多後生晚輩折服;而九九年那張前作「The Soft Bulletin」更是公認九○年代結束前,夠格與Pink Floyd之「Dark Side Of The Moon」相提並論的經典。 成團十多年來,他們傑作不斷,甚至也衝上了該有的顛峰。可是,此刻這三年來全新的專輯「Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots」,卻叫人驚覺,原來The Flaming Lips已經登上了另一處凡人幾乎眺望不到的創意山頭。

本來乍看以為一切照舊,自九七年的專輯「Zaireeka」起,他們就習慣在製作人Dave Fridmann位於紐約的錄音室工作。這位Mercury Rev的貝斯手,就因為原團的「Deserter’s Songs」成為當代搖滾新美學指標人物之一;其後更外接了Mogwai、Sparklehorse與Luna等團的製作重任,繼續發揮其影響力。 兩年前的春天The Flaming Lips 開始籌備「Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots」這張專輯,依舊由他擔綱,但在主唱Wayne Coyne跟團員的心裡,似乎顯然毫無戀棧之意。

他們一方面進行著前作之主打單曲"Race For The Price"的重新混音工程(始終不滿意,後來沒發表),而Wayne Coyne一邊還埋頭譜寫著他參與的第一部電影【Christmas On Mars】的配樂;同時又接獲一封電子郵件,告知他們之前巡迴時所結識,那位經營著唱片行的日本女子突然過世了!這些聽起來毫不相干的獨立事件,似乎正是隱約推動The Flaming Lips變革的新力量。 當然只有Wayne Coyne心裡最清楚,到底是否因為他在那部科幻電影(故事大約是地球終於殖民了火星,但有天這太空計劃決定終止,火星上的住民該何去何從…)扮演一個類似聖誕老人的角色,所以他們才把樂團的聲響全面太空化,將新迷幻搖滾的格局進一步以細碎卻龐大,宛如星際隕石群襲來的電氣音色及節奏層層包裹,比Air、Boards Of Canada乃至近期的Radiohead都不失色;甚至虛構出一個日本女孩叫Yoshimi(專輯內就真的請來日本噪音怪胎樂隊Boredoms的團員Yoshimi),獨自對抗殺人機器The Pink Robots這款把戲。宛如初生之犢才有的破格勇氣,The Flaming Lips再度讓世人瞠目結舌。
