PAD protest: Let's take a funeral break

I'm a curmudgeon, says a foreigner friend at work, so treat these curmudgeonly words with caution.

A large sample of Thailand's high and mighty turned out yesterday for the funeral of 'Bow' Angkhana Radappanyawut, 28, who died in last week's clashes between protesters and police near parliament.

No one had heard of 'Nong Bow' (น้องโบว์-อังคณา ระดับปัญญาวุฒิ), as she is known, before last week. Yesterday thousands of people turned up to her royally-sponsored funeral service - presided over by Her Majesty the Queen.

Her Royal Highness Chulabhorn Valayalaksana also attended the rites, as did army chief Anupong Paojinda, Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, and Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin.

As Her Majesty arrived, crowds of people shouted 'Long Live the Queen'.

The cremation took place at Wat Sriprawat in Nonthaburi's Bang Kruai district. People's Alliance for Democracy supporters also turned out in force.

PAD is the protest group which surrounded parliament last Tuesday, prompting police to respond with tear gas. One of those shells hit Nong Bow, or went off close to her, killing her.

Her father had dropped her and her mother off at the protest. Her mother was not present at the funeral rites, as she is being treated for injuries received during the protest.

During the service, the Queen spoke to Bow's father Jinda Radappanyawut. Later, he recounted what the Queen said: 'Her Majesty gave moral support to our family. The Queen said that Nong Bow was a decent person who helped the nation and the King

At the Pantip webboard, skeptical Thais are asking if she did indeed pass on these words, or if Nong's Bow's father is putting his own spin on the remarks, to portray PAD's actions and his daughter's part in them in a favourable light.

On the other hand, it is difficult to know what else the Queen should say. 'She was a silly girl, turning up at the protest that day - what was she thinking?'

Another Thai skeptic asked if the word 'hero' is appropriate to describe Nong Bow (no, most say - you have to die in the service of the nation for that).

Another said that coverage of the funeral on television brought to mind royally-sponsored funeral service rites held for soldiers killed in the troubled South.

'But unlike them, Nong Bow was not killed in the line of duty performed in the public service. Does the Queen normally preside over funerals for ordinary folk not connected to the public service?' one poster asks.

Pantip posters speculate that one reason the Queen may have decided to preside over the ceremony was to encourage a sense of unity among Thais, divided by politics in recent months.

PAD's leaders also turned out. The Manager newspaper, owned by PAD co-founder Sondhi Limthongkul, said the Queen exchanged remarks with Sondhi as she was leaving the funeral. They were all smiles, it says fawningly.

That's Sondhi preaching to his faithful at the funeral above. The Queen and her daughter also appear, along with people's hero Nong Bow.

Army chief Anupong Paojinda's departure was less than tidy.

After the Queen and Princess Chulabhorn left, a ruckus broke out as military chiefs were jostled by PAD supporters.

Security guards helped army commander-in-chief Gen Anupong push his way past the hostile crowds to his car.
