Uruguayans taunt Asamoah Gyan as he hits the crossbar with a 120th-minute penalty that would've seen Ghana into the semi-finals.

What a day of football. We had today potentially the greatest day of football in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, (I know I've said that a few times in the past couple weeks now!) and the second day of Quarter-Finals and the Semis are still to come. It was the day of two-shockers. Joint-favourites Brazil were widely expected to dispose of Netherlands who've been patchy of late. Despite leading 1-0 at half-time, the spirited Oranje came back with graft to win 2-1, with Wesley Sneijder the hero of the show again. Ghana came inches close, and at times shitted on the impressive Uruguay side, by sometimes in football things just aren't meant to be. They took the lead and lost it, they had an extra-time penalty missed and they eventually lost 4-2 on penalties in a match that will live long in the memory. So that's it. Africa's participation in this World Cup is over. Sad. The Netherlands will now go on to play Uruguay in Cape Town on Tuesday. How cruely satisfying this game can be!

NETHERLANDS 2-1 BRAZIL (BRAZIL, YES BRAZIL ELIMINATED!)

Robin van Persie helps Wesley Sneijder to celebrate his famous winner against Brazil..A European in the Semi Final!

Goodbye to the Samba boys! For the second World Cup in succesion, they're out at the QF stage but for long periods in the first half, this didn't seem realistic. Just 10 minutes into the game, a fantastic pass from Felipe Melo split open a loose Dutch defence, lacking Joris Mathijsen after he was injured in the warm-up. ROBINHO latched onto this terrific ball and stroked a calm finish past Stekelenburg. It was well deserved just because of how Brazilian class was beating Dutch nerves, and you would've thought that a bit of a rout was on the cards. Although Dirk Kuyt and Sneijder had a couple'a pot shots for the Dutch, Juan kept it solid at the back for Brazil. Stekelenburg shold be thanked for keeping his team in the game for producing a stunning save following a silky Brazilian move. The ever impressive MICHEL BASTOS was involved again from the back, finding Robinho to Luis Fabiano who quickly back-heeled to the quiet KAKA. His effort seemed goal-bound for the top corner until Stek' pulled off a fine save. Brazil weren't at their free flowing best but the balance of the game suited the score in the first half, and Brazil's dominance seemed fair enough. Think again. The Netherlands, as they've done many times, came out a different side in the second half and ARJEN ROBBEN being kicked around all over the place for the whole game had to stop at some point. A quick free kick was crossed in by WESLEY SNEIJDER and goalie Cesar tried punching it out only to collide with FELIPE MELO ..the ball bounced in as both players missed it. It was to be a day of bad luck. Kaka was one on one and should've put Brazil ahead again, but soon after his teams defence fell through for a second time. A corner from the right was flicked on perfectly by Dirk Kuyt for Sneijder to head into an empty net, and Oranje was the vibrant force again! Where the hell was Cesar and Lucio this time!? they just went missing when it most counted. FELIPE MELO was sent-off with 15 mins to go for a stupid lunge and kickout again at...yep, Robben. Brazil were all but finished. they threw all their men forward towards the end and allowed Holland to hit them on the break. Maicon was impressive for Brazil and Huntelaar should've done better for the Dutch but that was that. Holland got their revenge for many past encounters. Brazil, who basically didn't show up in the second half are GONE. Who said S.American's own football!? European's rule baby! Who's backing a Netherlands v Spain final!? (impartial view here...) Netherlands spirit is OUTTA this world though, no debating that one.

Amazing game, the best so far. So no 'Goal of the Day' today, just check out Uruguay 1-1 Ghana (4-2 pens.) - aka the Game of the Tournament so far! :

Diego Forlan celebrates his equaliser in a 1-1 QF draw against Ghana, with penalties eventually allowing his Uruguay into the Semis to face Netherlands!

URUGUAY 1-1 GHANA (URUGUAY WIN 4-2 ON PENS. - GHANA OUT!)
No fairytail ending, and most notably no more Africans in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. This does mean that Uruguay reached their first Semi since 1970 but it was scarcely deserved against a spirited and almost victorious Ghanaian side. The game at one point was end to end stuff, with either side having periods of sustained control. John Mensah nearly scored an own goal after almost putting a corss past his won goalie, while badboy Sulley Muntari had a couple of wayward efforts of his own to show that Ghana were not to be underestimated. Captain Lugano had to go off for Uruguay due to an injury and Uruguay were failing to shine. Instead the Ghanaians were impressing more, especially that man KEVIN PRINCE BOATENG yet again, always using his strength and looking for that killer pass, one of which almost set up Gyan only to shoot wide. The pressure paid off because 2 minutes into first half injury time, SULLEY MUNTARI crashed in a speculative 40-yard effort when it seemed a bit unlikely. He found the ball, turned and unleashed a vicious low shot which beat Muslera in goal and most others. wtf!? Outta no where! Uruguay had to come out and dominate in the second half, and thats just what they did. Just 10 minutes in, the so-far quiet DIEGO FORLAN showed his class by slamming in an angled free-kick, direct from about 25 yeards out. It swung, it dipped. It hit Kingson's top corner. I'd put this goal just about Muntari's and Honda's free-kick last week just because of the pure passion in the strike, the celebration and ofcourse, the importance. Two stunning strikes. The match now sided with Ghana. They had the edge in the final parts of the second half, even though by that time, Suarez could easily have won it for Uruguay.

Half an hour extra time was required, most of which were owned by Ghana. How Uruguay survived this onslaught is a mirracle. It just WAS meant to happen for them, and WASN'T meant to happen for Africa this time. The first 15 saw little, the second 15 saw Ghana camp in Uruguay's half. Here's the dramatic end. 120th minute, Ghana have a freekick WHEN THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD ONE - please not. Their attacker fell over his own shoe lace. Either way it was delivered in and missed by Muslera. With an open goal, Appiah smashed a ball at Suarez's knee and twice, Adiyah headed at the goal, one legitely denied, and secondly denied by Suarez's delibarate handball. Talk about taking one for the team! Red Card for him, he'll miss the semis, penalty Ghana!
Last kick of the game. For the semi-finals. The first African nation ever to the semis. He smashed the crossbar ! :| It was fulltime, ad penalties followed. What shit, shit luck. Uruguay went on to win it 4-2, and here's a list of the orders. What started as a shitty World Cup is ending as one of the best ones ever. Sent-ff Suarez's Cartwheels will descrive the picture no better.
